‘One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.’ Bob Marley

Prior to my last trip to the Calais ‘Jungle’ refugee camp I had heard of a ‘hauntingly beautiful’ singer of songs in Pashto from Afghanistan. I hoped to meet with him and asked my friend to make an introduction for us. It turned out that the first day we arrived I bumped into my friend with the singer in question in the family area of the camp. We met briefly and I asked if I could record some songs and do an interview with him. We made a loose arrangement for the next day.

When I came to meet him he was in the therapy centre where he assists families and co-ordinates food distributions for Afghan families with children. You see he is one of several people in the camp that although they are in a dire situation have decided to help make life easier for others. All of his own family had been killed when he was ten and he had been in the care of a kind lady until at the age of fifteen he had been put out on his own. It was hard to reconcile this tragic back story with the charming, generous young man that I met.

He insisted we have breakfast with him and some friends...spicy eggs Afghan style with hot fresh baked flat bread...seriously delicious. Then we got on with the recording. He had no tuner for his guitar and as he’s only been playing guitar for one month was apologetic about the sound of it. As Liam Hourican sketched his portrait he sang several songs for us ‘off the cuff’ before he had to continue with his self appointed duties.

This young man impressed us so much and we were all mesmerised by his music. He’s got so much to offer, not to mention the fact that he speaks 6 languages!

Liam Hourican did the beautiful sketch of our friend distributing aid to Afghan families.
